Research Training Opportunities

Overview

Research in the Nutritional Epidemiology Branch (NEB) emphasizes:

  • etiologic studies of specific cancer sites, including esophagus, stomach, colorectum, pancreas, liver and prostate;
  • substantive investigations of individual nutrients, nonnutritive food constituents, food groups;
  • integrative studies of multifactorial nutritional exposures, such as dietary patterns and glycemic load;
  • energy balance studies, including those focusing on body size and physical activity studies;
  • molecular epidemiologic studies to investigate genetic and hormonal interactions in nutrition-related cancer;
  • improving exposure assessment tools, including questionnaires, databases and biomarkers; and
  • issues of dietary measurement error.

NEB is interdisciplinary and collaborates regularly with extramural investigators in the U.S. and abroad. Fellows select a primary mentor who helps guide them through their training experience. In addition, a committee of senior investigators from NEB and the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) is established for each fellow and meets twice a year to review the fellow's research and progress and to provide both scientific and career guidance. Fellows may work with multiple researchers on a variety of projects, conduct studies independently, participate in all NEB activities, and attend scientific conferences. Qualifications

Postdoctoral fellowships: To be eligible, applicants must have an M.D. or doctoral degree in nutrition, epidemiology, biostatistics, genetics, or other related research fields, or be pursuing a degree in one of these areas.

Predoctoral fellowships: Individuals must be enrolled in a doctoral program with the desire to complete their dissertation in NEB or have completed a master's degree in a field of relevance to NEB.
