Training Opportunities with Specific Investigators
Fellowship in Physical Activity, Energy Balance, and Cancer with Dr. Matthews
The Nutritional Epidemiology Branch seeks an outstanding post-doctoral fellow to work with Dr. Charles E. Matthews, PhD in the conduct of etiologic and methodological studies of physical activity, energy balance, and cancer. Dr. Matthews’ etiologic research focuses on the benefits of physical activity, the adverse consequences of sedentary behavior, and energy balance on risk for cancer. This work includes etiologic epidemiology as well as investigation of the biologic mechanisms underlying these associations. Dr. Matthews’ methodological research seeks to develop, test, and implement better tools to assess physical activity behaviors in large population-based studies. Work here includes the description of the measurement error structure of physical activity questionnaires, and the development and testing of better self-report and objective measures of relevant behavioral exposures. The successful candidate will have access to a number of cohort studies and other resources within the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, including the NIH American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Diet and Health Study, the Prostate, Lung, Colon, and Ovary Cancer Screening Trial (PLCO), the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Cohort (ATBC), and the NCI Cohort Consortium. These studies offer excellent opportunities to investigate the etiologic roles physical activity, energy balance, and related molecular biomarkers in the development of cancer. Applicants must either hold an MD or doctorate degree in or be enrolled in a doctoral program in epidemiology, kinesiology/exercise physiology, nutrition, or a related field.
Individuals with strong analytic and quantitative skills in epidemiology, an understanding of exercise physiolology and energy metabolism, cancer epidemiology, and/or cancer biology are encouraged to apply. Good writing skills are also desirable.
