Program Director, Trans-Divisional Research Program

The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) is recruiting a highly accomplished, tenure-eligible senior investigator to serve as the Program Director of the Trans-Divisional Research Program (TDRP). 

DCEG is the world’s most comprehensive cancer epidemiology research group. Its renowned epidemiologists, geneticists, biostatisticians, and data scientists conduct population and multidisciplinary research to discover the causes of cancer and inform the means for prevention by conducting transdisciplinary epidemiological and genetic research. Within DCEG, TDRP conducts and facilitates trans-Divisional research across the eight scientific branches that make up DCEG. TDRP accomplishes its mission by: identifying new trans-Divisional research opportunities and directions for the Division; overseeing the development and implementation of the DCEG strategic plan; coordinating Connect for Cancer Prevention, a new prospective study for the Division and broader scientific community; building collaborative data platforms and tools for large-scale epidemiological research, following Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable (FAIR) principles; and supporting DCEG working groups to facilitate trans-Divisional research. TDRP also hosts the Data Science & Engineering group led by the DCEG Chief Data Scientist and the newly established Virtual Bioinformatics Core, which facilitates bioinformatic studies across the Division. TDRP currently includes a staff of two tenured investigators, a senior scientist, six staff scientists, pre- and postdoctoral fellows, and over 20 other scientific and administrative contract staff. The main responsibilities of the Program Director include:

  • Oversee the research activities at TDRP, including the Data Science & Engineering group, Connect for Cancer Prevention coordinating center, and Virtual Bioinformatics Core.
  • Oversee the administrative management of TDRP, supervise staff members, and mentor tenure-track investigators and pre/postdoctoral fellows.
  • Assist the Division Director in making decisions concerning the initiation, expansion, integration, or termination of research programs, funding, and scientific personnel review and promotions.
  • Identify new research opportunities and directions for the Division. Develop new initiatives and infrastructure to facilitate trans-Divisional research and collaborative research within NIH intramural and the extramural scientific communities. This will involve overseeing and facilitating trans-Divisional activities and resources across eight research branches/labs and developing and implementing the DCEG Strategy Planning.
  • Provide scientific advice to requests for information and responses to inquiries from NIH, Congress, scientific communities, and the public. 
  • Provide consultation to national and international investigators and public health officials and act as liaison with agencies and organizations seeking expertise related to the mission of DCEG.

In addition to overseeing TDRP resources, as a senior investigator in DCEG, the Program Director will have resources to conduct an independent program of research and undergo quadrennial review by the NCI Board of Scientific Counselors. 

The successful candidate will be expected to lead a world-class research portfolio and have extensive expertise in cancer epidemiology. The successful candidate must have:

  • Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in epidemiology or a relevant discipline (e.g., biostatistics or cancer genetics)
  • Broad knowledge in cancer epidemiology
  • Excellent track record as a cancer epidemiology researcher that meets the criteria for NIH tenure
  • Demonstrable ability to provide research leadership, with experience in directing and managing a large and diverse scientific research program
  • Well-honed administrative and interpersonal skills, highly skilled in facilitating productive interactions among researchers, and proven effectiveness in staff supervision  and mentoring
  • Demonstrable track record of promoting diversity and the inclusion of persons from underrepresented groups in biomedical research 

Salary will be commensurate with experience. A full civil service package of benefits (including health insurance, life insurance, and retirement) is available. Candidates may be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or eligible for a visa that will enable work in the United States. This position is subject to a background investigation.
