Amy Berrington Presents at Harvard Center for Radiation Sciences Annual Symposium

, by DCEG Staff

Amy Berrington de González, D.Phil.

In October 2019, Amy Berrington, D.Phil., chief of the Radiation Epidemiology Branch (REB), gave an invited talk entitled, "Health effects of early life exposure to medical radiation" at the 22nd Annual John B. Little (JBL) Symposium hosted by the Center for Radiation Sciences at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The theme of the meeting was “Early life impacts of genes and environment” and featured talks by leading investigators focused on the biology and life-long impact of early life vulnerabilities. Her presentation discussed the increased risk of cancer and other non-cancer effects in children exposed to medical radiation.

The symposium was a follow up from a meeting at the NCI in July, hosted by the REB. The half day retreat was designed to review current research with an emphasis on opportunities for interdisciplinary investigation and joint training. Participants included radiobiologists Zachary Nagel, Ph.D., and Kristopher Sarosiek, Ph.D., and director Zhi-Min Yuan, M.D., M.S., Ph.D., of the Harvard JBL Center for Radiation Sciences.

These two events are part of ongoing efforts to build collaborative partnerships between experts in radiation epidemiology and radiobiology across the NCI and Harvard that will improve understanding of the health effects of radiation and develop effective preventive and therapeutic strategies.
