Molecular Epidemiology and Occupational & Environmental Exposures Postdoctoral Fellowship

Work with Dr. Mark Purdue

Mark Purdue, senior investigator in OEEB

Mark Purdue, Ph.D.

Mark Purdue, Ph.D., a senior investigator in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch, is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow with an interest in conducting research integrating classical and molecular epidemiologic methods to investigate the carcinogenicity of occupational and environmental exposures.

Dr. Purdue is leading several studies investigating cancer risks and biologic effects associated with exposures to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), chlorinated solvents, contaminants in the electronic waste recycling industry and other agents. He is also conducting molecular epidemiologic research to better understand the etiology of kidney cancer as well as factors underlying racial and ethnic disparities in incidence and survival for this malignancy. Many research opportunities are available using data and biospecimens from a rich collection of studies; these include prospective cohorts with banked biospecimens, nested case-control studies of cancer with measured serum PFAS concentrations, case-control studies of kidney cancer with tumor tissue specimens and the largest genome-wide association study of kidney cancer to date. There are opportunities to work on existing projects and to develop new projects addressing these and other research topics.

The successful candidate will receive mentoring and the opportunity to gain expertise in collecting and analyzing different types of occupational, environmental and molecular epidemiologic data, progressing to greater independence during the fellowship.

In addition, the candidate will have access to a large variety of career development training, including grant writing. Learn more about the other advantages of being a DCEG fellow, including our distinctive research environment, mentorship, professional development, compensation and benefits, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in epidemiology or a related field along with expertise in data analysis and excellent writing skills. A background in occupational and/or molecular epidemiology is preferable.

Application

Submit your CV to the application database so it can be reviewed by investigators across the Division searching for trainees. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Applicants may be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or foreign nationals (visa requirements apply). Candidates are subject to a background investigation.
