Ovarian and Endometrial Cancer Studies

Diagram of anatomy of the female reproductive system

Anatomy of the female reproductive system. The organs in the female reproductive system include the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. The uterus has a muscular outer layer called the myometrium and an inner lining called the endometrium.

CGB investigators are studying the etiologic heterogeneity of ovarian cancers and the roles that inflammation and endogenous hormones play in carcinogenesis. They have also been testing novel sampling strategies for collecting endometrial samples. Selected studies include:

Assessment of Screening Modalities for Gynecologic Cancers

A feasibility study to assess the use of alternative sampling techniques and molecular assays to detect endometrial and ovarian cancer

Benign Reproductive Tissue Evaluation Study

A study to investigate the association of risk factors with molecular changes in the ovaries and endometrium

The DETECT Study – Discovery and Evaluation of Testing for Endometrial Cancer in Tampons

The NCI is partnering with the University of Alabama Birmingham to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of measuring biomarkers from self-collected vaginal tampon samples for early detection of endometrial cancer in a racially-diverse population of women undergoing hysterectomy for endometrial cancer and other benign uterine conditions.

Endometrial cancer risk factors and biomarkers for natural history and early detection: The Mayo Study

Researchers at the NCI and Mayo Clinic designed a large, prospective cohort study of women at risk of endometrial cancer undergoing diagnostic evaluation to assess risk factors and collect novel biospecimens for evaluation of emerging biomarkers.

Study of Endometrial Hyperplasia Progression

DCEG is conducting research on cancers of the endometrium and uterus.

Ovarian and Endometrial Cancer Case-Control Study in Poland

A study of common inherited variation associated with risk of ovarian cancer, carried out using data and biospeciments from a population-based case-control study of ovarian and endometrial cancer conducted among female residents of Warsaw and Lodz (Poland).
