Staff Scientist, Transdivisional Research Program

The Transdivisional Research Program (TDRP), Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) is recruiting an experienced and talented individual to serve as Staff Scientist 1, Intramural Professional Designation (IPD). This position is located within the Transdivisional Research Program (TDRP), Trans-Divisional Research Program - NCI, at the NCI Shady Grove Campus (9609 Medical Center Drive, Rockville, MD 20850).

The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) is committed to discovering and understanding the genetic architecture of cancer, including the identification of common and rare loci associated with cancer risk, the investigation of underlying biological mechanisms, and the integration of genomic and epidemiologic data to inform cancer risk stratification, prevention, and early detection strategies. The Transdivisional Research Program (TDRP) conducts and facilitates collaborative research in cancer epidemiology, genetics, and prevention across DCEG. Principal Investigators in TDRP conduct etiologic research with potential clinical and public health applications and lead studies evaluating population-based early detection and cancer prevention strategies. They study natural history and multi-step carcinogenesis of various cancer sites, conduct large field studies in the US and with international partners, develop approaches for risk prediction to inform clinical decision making, and evaluate novel biomarkers for risk prediction and early detection. TDRP studies integrate genomic data with clinical and epidemiologic analyses through collaborative research efforts involving investigators within DCEG and external institutions, with a strong focus on data science, real-life evidence, and AI-supported approaches.

The Staff Scientist 1, working under the direction of a Senior Investigator within the TDRP, will contribute to multiple aspects of the investigator’s research program on anogenital and gynecological cancers, as well as the development of a new effort to study the natural history and molecular epidemiology of cancer precursors. This work will include national and international collaborations; the ability to successfully interact with multidisciplinary teams, including epidemiologists, biostatisticians, public health officials, clinicians, and pathologists is a critical component of the work.

Specific duties include coordinating study design and implementation of field studies, managing complex genomic and clinical datasets, performing statistical and bioinformatic analyses, and contributing to the development and maintenance of collaborative research resources. Responsibilities also include mentoring trainees and preparing scientific reports and manuscripts for presentation or publication. Independent work on data analyses and research projects will be encouraged.

Eligibility

The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or public health). The position requires strong quantitative skills, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, initiative, experience in running field studies, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while working independently. Experience in international collaborative efforts will be an important asset. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as demonstrated through scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
