Postdoctoral Fellow

NCI Shady Grove | 7E620

Sergio Chávez, Ph.D., joined DCEG as a postdoctoral fellow in the Biostatistics Branch (BB) in September 2025. He earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2025. During his doctoral training, Dr. Chávez developed nonparametric tests of independence for high-dimensional data using methods from scientific computing, wavelet analysis, and harmonic analysis.

As a postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Chávez works under the mentorship of Bin Zhu, Ph.D., and Tongwu Zhang, Ph.D., developing mathematical and computational methods for mutational signature analysis. His research also focuses on expanding classification frameworks for insertion-deletion mutations, somatic tandem repeats, double-strand breaks, and structural rearrangements.
