Science Writer, Communications Project Manager (Contractor)

The National Cancer Institute Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) is recruiting a science writer and communications project manager to join the Communications Team. This individual will be responsible for science writing, project management in support of communications and implementation goals identified through the Division’s strategic planning process, and will serve as strategic communications advisor to the Communications Team Director, focusing on both external and internal communications. This is a contract position located in Rockville, Maryland.

Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as science writer, generating content for multiple platforms. Short- and long-form articles will be written on topics related to cancer etiology, epidemiology, genetic susceptibility, etc., for a scientific audience summarizing recent findings from the Division’s research program.  
  • Serve as an advisor to the Communications Team Director on science communications, strategic communications, and public affairs, assist with streamlining communications standard operating procedures, identifying novel opportunities for expanding reach.  
  • Provide project management expertise to assist with prioritization of communications activities to maximize productivity of the team and results for the Division.
  • Provide critical evaluation (qualitative and quantitative) of the performance of the Division’s communications outlets (web, social media) that may inform high-level planning.
  • Generate and edit web and social media content.
  • Develop and implement social media campaigns, communications/roll-out plans for major scientific initiatives.
  • Provide strategic review and editing of a wide range of materials (study summaries, web content, press materials, fact sheets, study newsletters) written by other members of the communications team.
  • Provide ad hoc staff trainings on key communications skills: media training, social media, presentation development and delivery.
  • Serves as Executive Secretary for Scientific Review in the Division

Qualifications (required):

  • B.S. or B.A. in related field (Master’s degree in related field, preferred—public health, health communications, epidemiology, etc.)
  • Minimum 3 years public affairs/communications experience (science communications, preferred)
  • Expert communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint); graphic design skills (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) preferred.
