Sergio Morato Rafet, Ph.D., joined DCEG as a postdoctoral fellow in the Radiation Epidemiology Branch (REB) in July 2022. He earned a Master of Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de València specializing in nuclear energy in 2015, and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering at the same university in 2020. In 2019, as part of his Ph.D., Dr. Morato Rafet completed a predoctoral fellowship in the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Department at the University of Michigan, where he worked with different approaches to the neutron transport equation, such as simplified spherical harmonics and diffusion equations. This work informed his Ph.D. thesis, for which he developed a deterministic neutron transport code for calculating reactor criticality and neutron distributions using the discrete ordinates method, simplified spherical harmonics equations, and diffusion approximation. Additionally, during his Ph.D., he had the opportunity to gain experience performing radiation dose and shielding calculations for medical applications (radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging, and nuclear medicine) using a variety of Monte Carlo radiation transport codes.
In REB, Dr. Morato Rafet is contributing to different projects focused on Monte Carlo simulations and deterministic transport codes to calculate organ dose in radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine fields, under the mentorship of Matthew Mille, Ph.D., staff scientist, and Choonsik Lee, Ph.D., Head, Dosimetry Unit and senior investigator.
