, by DCEG Staff
Tenure-track investigator Meredith Shiels, Ph.D., was selected as this year’s DCEG recipient of the Women Scientist Advisor’s Mentoring and Leadership Award. The award recognizes DCEG and CCR investigators for exceptional dedication, leadership, and tireless efforts to promote and nurture NCI women scientists at all stages of their careers. As an outstanding NCI scientist, Dr. Shiels has provided guidance and mentoring to women and men graduate students, fellows, staff clinicians and scientists, as well as tenure-track and senior investigators that have led to professional and scientific achievements within and outside of the NCI.
Highlights from her nomination cited the following qualities:
“Not only is Dr. Shiels kind and supportive, she is one of the most talented and creative epidemiologists I have had the privilege of working with. She is open to learning about her trainees’ ideas and provides valuable feedback on how to develop a research question that is clear and direct. She asks poignant questions and helps her trainees to work through methodological concerns in their research ideas. I have always felt comfortable coming to Dr. Shiels with questions and always leave conversations with her feeling reinvigorated to move forward with my projects.”
