In December 2023, Douglas R. Stewart, M.D., senior investigator in the Clinical Genetics Branch, was elected a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). ASCI is one of the nation’s oldest medical honor societies and one of few organizations focused on the special role of physician-scientists in research.

Dr. Stewart has changed clinical practice with his contributions to multiple distinct domains in adult and pediatric germline cancer genetics. He has quantified cancer risk, described novel neoplasms, and developed clinical guidance in several different tumor-predisposition disorders (neurofibromatosis type 1, DICER1-, CHEK2-, and PALB2-related tumor predisposition). In addition, he has discovered germline risk variants in genes associated with multiple tumor types and pioneered the genome-first approach to the characterization of prevalence, penetrance, and phenotype.
