DCEG investigators and staff at the 2023 NCI Scientific Investigators Retreat

The Annual NCI Scientific Investigators Retreat was held at Hood College on October 16, 2023. DCEG researchers from the Metabolic Epidemiology Branch, Maria Constanza Camargo, Ph.D., investigator, and Steven C. Moore, Ph.D., M.P.H., senior investigator, presented their research to the audience of principal investigators assembled from DCEG and the Center for Cancer Research (CCR).  

Dr. Camargo presented her research on the “Changing Epidemiology of Gastric Cancer,” and Dr. Moore presented his work on “Physical Activity, Cancer, and Death: Insights from a Decade of Large Cohort and Consortium Studies.”  

The morning began with opening remarks by CCR Director Dr. Tom Misteli and DCEG Director, Stephen J. Chanock, M.D. Investigators from CCR also presented their research, along with two award lectures. Dr. Chanock introduced Dr. Andrea Califano, from Columbia University, New York, New York, Irving Medical Center, and presented him with the 26th Annual Alfred G. Knudson Award. Dr. Califano’s talk was entitled, “Elucidating and Targeting Cancer Dependencies One Cell at a Time.” 

As is tradition, the Women Scientist Advisors gave their annual mentorship award. Aimée R. Kreimer, Ph.D., senior investigator in the Infections and Immunoepidemiology Branch, presented the award to Mia M. Gaudet, Ph.D., senior scientist for the Connect for Cancer Prevention Study.
