Stephen Chanock Elected to the National Academy of Medicine

Stephen J. Chanock, M.D., Director of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) was elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) on October 21, 2024, during their annual meeting. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

Dr. Chanock is one of 100 individuals who were elected by current NAM members through a process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health. He was honored for being an international leader in cancer genetics, identifying susceptibility alleles in more than a dozen cancers, first describing clonal mosaicism and its relationship to cancer and aging, and creating and fostering international consortia on BRCA genetics and COVID-19.

Dr. Chanock came to the NCI in 2001 as a tenured investigator in the Genomic Variation Section of the Pediatric Oncology Branch in the Center for Cancer Research; he joined DCEG in 2007 as chief of the Laboratory of Translational Genomics. From 2012 to 2013, he also served as Acting Co-Director of the NCI Center for Cancer Genomics and was appointed Director of DCEG in 2013. He is a leading expert in the discovery and characterization of cancer susceptibility regions in the human genome and has received numerous awards for his scientific contributions to our understanding of common inherited genetic variants associated with cancer risk and outcomes.
