Headshot of Choonsik Lee

Choonsik Lee, Ph.D., senior investigator and head of the Dosimetry Unit in the Radiation Epidemiology Branch (REB), has been appointed to serve on Committee 2 (Doses from Radiation Exposure Standing Committee) of the International Committee on Radiologic Protection (ICRP) for the term 2021-2025. The committee is tasked with the development of “dosimetric methodology for the assessment of internal and external radiation exposures, including reference biokinetic and dosimetric models and reference data and dose coefficients, for use in the protection of people and the environment.”

The news was announced on the ICRP website June 8, 2021. Membership is decided by the ICRP Main Commission through a voting process that considers many factors, including the skills and experience needed for the coming term, gender balance, and geographic diversity.

Dr. Lee develops methods and tools to estimate radiation dose from medical exposures, including treatment and diagnostic tests, in order to generate reliable data for use in epidemiological studies of ionizing radiation and cancer risk. The dosimetry tools he has developed are available for use by the research community.
