Engels Named Chief of Infections and Immunoepidemiology Branch

In June 2017, Eric Engels, M.D., was appointed Chief of the Infections and Immunoepidemiology Branch (IIB). Dr. Engels is an international leader in research on cancer among immunosuppressed individuals, including persons with HIV and transplant recipients, and on the epidemiology of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He has served as Acting Chief of IIB since April.
Dr. Engels earned a B.A. in mathematics from the University of Virginia and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He trained in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and completed clinical training in infectious diseases and earned an M.P.H. from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Engels joined DCEG in 1998 as a senior staff fellow, became an investigator in 2000, and was tenured in 2007. In addition, he has served as chair of the DCEG Technical Evaluation of Protocols Committee and a member of the Senior Advisory Group since 2011. Dr. Engels received an NIH Merit Award in 2012 in recognition of his research resulting in “Improved understanding of the cancer risk and burden in immune-compromised populations.” In 2015, he was recognized by DCEG with the prestigious annual mentoring award.
