Douglas Stewart Co-organizes MPNST Workshop

In October 2016, Douglas Stewart, M.D., investigator in the Clinical Genetics Branch, co-hosted a workshop on malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST), a rare and deadly sarcoma, with Karlyne Reilly, Ph.D., and Brigitte Widemann, M.D., both of the NCI Center for Cancer Research, AeRang Kim, M.D., Ph.D., of Children’s National Health Systems, and David Viskochil, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Utah.
The two-day scientific meeting, titled “MPNST State of the Science: Outlining a Research Agenda for the Future,” brought together some of the world’s leading experts to summarize the past decade and a half of research, as well as to identify current challenges and opportunities for future progress.
Dr. Stewart studies neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) as part of the DCEG research program on rare germline variations associated with cancer risk. Patients with NF1 are at greatly increased risk for MPNST.
