Demetrius Albanes Receives NIH Honor Award

On November 7, 2019, Demetrius Albanes, M.D., senior investigator in the Metabolic Epidemiology Branch, received the NIH Office of the Director Honor Award for his service as Chair of the Committee on Scientific Conduct and Ethics (CSCE). Dr. Albanes and his fellow committee members were recognized with this award for providing professional oversight and development of training opportunities to promote the responsible conduct of research at NIH.

The CSCE consists of NIH scientists who provide oversight of the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training program for intramural research. The committee develops case studies and supporting facilitator materials to improve training on complex scientific and professional integrity issues. Committee members also volunteer to serve as peer-panelists for authorship disputes and research misconduct inquiries and investigations. This can be arduous and disheartening work, but it is at the core of scientists’ self-regulation and the committee’s efforts service contribute to ensuring the integrity of the research enterprise.
