iCURE Scholars Program Increases Diversity of the NCI Intramural Workforce

In 2018, NCI launched the Intramural Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (iCURE) program to offer mentored research experiences to college students, graduate students, and postdoctoral candidates. iCURE aims to support the career progress of its scholars toward research independence, as well as foster and sustain diversity in the biomedical research pipeline. Eligible participants receive funding to complete research opportunities in the DCEG or the Center for Cancer Research, for one to three years, depending on where they are in their education or training.
DCEG welcomed its first iCURE scholar, postbaccalaureate fellow, Mone’t Thompson, B.S., in the fall of 2018. Ms. Thompson is conducting research in the Clinical Genetics Branch on cancer risk in patients with myotonic dystrophy and Li-Fraumeni Syndrome. As part of this fellowship, she is being mentored by Sharon Savage, M.D., Chief of CGB, and working with Rotana Alsaggaf, Ph.D., M.S., Shahinaz Gadalla, M.D., Ph.D., and Payal Khincha, M.B.B.S., M.S.H.S.
