DCEG Scientists Participate in the 2014 Beebe Symposium

, by DCEG Staff

In May, investigators from the Radiation Epidemiology Branch (REB) participated in the 2014 Gilbert W. Beebe Symposium, hosted by The National Academy of Sciences and NCI. This year’s symposium, titled The Science and Response to a Nuclear Reactor Accident, focused on current scientific knowledge and response plans for a nuclear reactor accident. The 2014 Beebe Symposium agenda  is available on the National Academies Web site.

Martha S. Linet, M.D., M.P.H., Chief of REB, chaired the organizing committee for this year’s symposium. Dr. Linet moderated the first symposium session, which focused on “Health and other effects,” and included a presentation on “Physical health effects” by Alina V. Brenner, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H. In addition, Dr. Linet gave a talk on “Planning for long-term follow-up and health risk studies” as part of a session on emergency response and protective measures.

Steven L. Simon, Ph.D., provided an overview of “Past nuclear reactor accidents: Where? When? Why?” during the opening remarks, and moderated a session on “Emergency response: Management of health effects.” Dr. Simon also served on the organizing committee

The symposium honors the memory of Dr. Gilbert W. Beebe, a distinguished radiation epidemiologist who served as a senior investigator in REB.
